The tortas are beautiful to incorporate into a buffet of hors d’oeuvres for cocktail parties, to give as a gift or simply serve with crackers or a crusty baguette and a glass of wine. These savory tortas are sure to be the main attraction at your next party.

  • Smashburger Sandy Springs

Atlanta’s newest burger sensation just opened their fifth store. Slightly OTP on Roswell Road in Sandy Springs, this Smashburger promises to bring a much-needed gourmet fast food experience to the North Fulton area. Forget McDonalds, Wendy’s, and the like: Smashburger is just a better burger!

This place has everything y’all ever wanted for the ultimate fast food experience…and they even serve adult beverages! Forget Five Guys, Wendy’s, Mickey D’s and the like: Smashburger has got beer and wine, plus your food is ready in six minutes or less!

Burgers, hot dogs, grilled chicken sandwiches, fries in multiple kinds — regular, shoestring, sweet potato and even veggie frites — plus fried pickles, fried onions and yummy chili. For lighter fare, there are fresh salads including slices of avocado, cucumbers, tomatoes, guacamole, and other crisp vegetables. Want to spice up your meal? Add the fresh grilled jalapenos which leave your mouth with a happy heat for the duration of your meal.

To cool off your palette, sample a Smashburger shake. These milkshakes are some of the best in Atlanta, made with Haagen-Dazs and available in floats and malts served in frosted mugs. Classic American flavors of chocolate, vanilla and strawberry compliment crazier concoctions such as the Nutter Butter. A sweet Peach Pie shake was created just for Smashburger’s Georgia locations.

The first Smashburger spot in Georgia is in Buckhead with two more stores up north in Johns Creek and Alpharetta plus a Kennesaw location making the Sandy Springs shop the fifth store to open in just six months! Management plans to open 20 Atlanta-area locations over the next seven years. Smashburger also opened shops in both Charlotte and New Orleans and are planning to spread more shops across the South.

  • Daddy Joe’s Beach BBQ

Daddy Joe’s Beach House BBQ & Grill is the best spot to stop off I-85. Located in Gaffney, S.C., Daddy Joe’s is a welcome find among the never-ending signs for McDonald’s, Subway, and other preservative-packed menus. It’s barely a mile’s drive off the interstate and well worth it.

In the land of value meals, instead of a greasy burger that’s been under a heating lamp for Lord knows how long, Daddy Joe’s raises the bar for fast food. Crispy, freshly fried shrimp and fish are served piping hot with your choice of sides and sauces. If y’all aren’t in the mood for seafood, Daddy has got you covered offering everything from burgers, ribs, chicken tenders and even Kielbasa Sausage.

For more information, check out Daddy’s Web site. Here are a few photos from our trip.

  • Frothy Love

There’s nothing better than someone you love serving up your favorite hot drink in bed. Be it coffee, tea, hot chocolate, or even warm milk for you old school folks, who doesn’t enjoy a mug of something tasty from the comfort of a snuggle spot betwixt the sheets? This holiday season, show some love to your bed fellow through the simple act of drawing a heart in their drink. Take this mocha for example: just a simple drizzle of chocolate syrup in the foam sweetens up the latte and brings a smile to the face. The same effect can be accomplished using whipped cream. Happy holidays!

  • Latitude Lands on Peachtree Street

New world flavors meet the old South dining scene as Latitude opens in the heart of Atlanta. Micah Willix has navigated his way as the former captain of the helm at Ecco to launch this endeavor in the former location of the Grape at Phipps Plaza reclaiming the space as Latitude. His new restaurant promises to be a brave adventure in the world of fine-dining at the mall.

Latitude has a worthy crew of Kenny Perlman (formerly of Seasons 52 and Houston’s) and Emily Streib Marcil, (of The Capital Grille and currently of Second Growth LLC). Together with Willix, they bring a world-cuisine that focuses on creative, globally inspired and flavorful food. Always tough to do, but they chose the right time to open during the hustle-and-bustle of the holiday season at this Atlanta shopping mecca.

Educated foodies and starving shoppers alike can enjoy Willix’s fine dining. Think tuna ceviche with charred avocado, lime juice and extra virgin olive oil, scallop crudo with saffron, fennel and champagne vinegar, plus golden tile fish with quinoa; or for the land lovers it’s beef tartare with roasted garlic, fried capers and fresh aioli. Sounds like all the right ingredients for an eclectic and tasty menu.

Pan-fried pork chop with artichoke confit, tomato and oregano paired with a tall glass of fine wine.

“Latitude is an opportunity for me to explore more options of different cuisines and cultures,” said Chef Willix, “but I still want to cook and create dishes that are simple and close to the source – grassroots.”

Marcil agrees. Latitude offers the city something special and unique, the perfect complement to Atlanta’s already burgeoning dining scene.”

Latitude’s main dining room and bar, the wine room offers the ideal option for intimate dinners and showcases the impressive wine selection in hardwood, floor-to-ceiling racks. Guests can also retreat to the oversized patio which creates an urban oasis offering comfortable rattan lounge seating, as well as a 14-foot high-top, concrete communal table perfect for sharing an al fresco evening with friends. Oversized planters and garden designs will flank the exterior of the patio while a tile encompassed water feature allows guests the opportunity to nestle in for a cozy evening.

Located at Phipps Plaza, Latitude serves lunch Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dinner is served Monday through Thursday 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Additional information can be found on Latitude’s website and to make a reservation please visit the website or call 678.990.9463.

Pretty Southern is excited to check out Latitude this coming Thursday. Check back later this week for our interview with Chef Micah Willix. Have you been to Latitude? If so, what did you like about the place (or do you have suggestions for the new concept?) Please comment below!

  • Spicy Oven Roasted Shrimp

Want a 10 minute weeknight meal? Tex Blair has the answer for you. The new Tex Blair’s Everything Seasoning helps turn an ordinary meal around thanks to a tasty blend of spices. Pick up some seafood, chicken, or veggies on the way home from work, coat in olive oil and a help of seasoning and – in the words of our favorite Louisiana chef, Emeril Lagasse – “bam!” y’all have a stellar entree. It only takes 15 minutes (and honestly y’all the longest part is heating up the oven).

1 lb. Shrimp, peeled, deveined, tail off 21/25 size
1 tbsp. Tex Blair’s Everything Seasoning
1 tpsp. Sweetwater Grower’s Garlic Red Pepper Infused Extra Virgin Olive Oil

    1. Combine shrimp, Texas Blair’s Everything Seasoning and Sweetwater Grower’s EVOO coating the shrimp well

    2. Place shrimp in a single layer on a lined sheet pan (sprinkle a ‘lil more seasoning on for good measure)

    3. Roast shrimp in a pre-heated 350 degree oven for 8-10 minutes or until desired doneness

    4. Ready to eat out of the oven (blow to cool first)

    5. Can be refrigerated for another meal

These shrimp would be yummy leftover lunch to take to work the next day. A little dash of the seasoning would be great for shrimp ‘n grits to serve at a weekend brunch.
