  • Five Spot Yogurt: Snellville’s Newest Sweetness

Dozens of people crowded outside the new Five Spot Yogurt in Snellville for its opening earlier this summer. Although the fire inspector hadn’t yet checked out the sprinkler system and thus customers weren’t allowed in, there was a steady traffic of employees bringing free frozen yogurt out to customers.

Within the shop was owner David Carswell, a resident of Alpharetta, Ga. Carswell described his history of entrepreneurship. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 2006 and ran an AT&T store in Watkinsville with a friend. In 2008, he became a franchisee for Little Caesars and with a business partner owned four stores.  The two of them parted company, with David inheriting the Little Caesars in Alpharetta and Duluth. It was after this that he went into the frozen yogurt business.
”I saw a need for a good frozen yogurt shop in Snellville,” he said.
He started working on it in September 2010.

David found a location and started working on the design.  Jessica Mullis from UGA helped create the logo, while another friend, Nicole Morgan, helped design and furnish the interior.  He purchased the equipment and signed the lease.
When asked the difference between his shop and the other frozen yogurt shops that have exploded across Metro Atlanta recently, Carswell explained that on Monday through Thursday, the prices are capped at $5.00 regardless of the weight.  There are also comfortable leather chairs.
”We offer free WiFi,” he said.
David said his yogurt was better-quality than many other yogurt places since it’s liquid-based.
”It’s not grainy like the other ones,” he noted.  “It’s very smooth texture.”

A sampling of the chocolate/vanilla swirl provided evidence for his claim. Unlike some frozen yogurts out there, there were no residual solids.
Five Spot features 16 flavors and over 40 toppings. Carswell said he hadn’t introduced new flavors yet, but he did intend to provide some later, such as jelly-flavored frozen yogurt to go with the peanut-butter-flavored yogurt already there.

When asked about how he would define a Southerner in the 21st Century, he said that was someone who upholds the traditions and values of their ancestors. “The South means warm weather, family values and friendly neighbors,” he said when asked his thoughts about the region.

Five Spot is located at the far end of the shopping center containing the Borders and Carmike Cinemas. It is next to the Panera Bread.

  • Southerners Love Our ‘Maters!

Luscious, juicy, ripe, tangy, succulent…tomatoes! Summertime finds Southerners planning picnics, reunions, barbeques and get-togethers with family and friends. Our special occasion meals often include fresh tomatoes. Generally we serve sliced red tomatoes or fried green tomatoes, but they can also be baked, stuffed, grilled, breaded, diced, pureed, or even canned for future use. Any way you slice them, we love our ‘maters!

Not only do we love eating tomatoes, many of us enjoy growing them. Whether we are seasoned experts or beginning gardeners, we delight in talking about our beautiful flowers and bountiful crops.

Here are a few gardening tips for tomatoes. Your local nursery or garden center can be helpful, too!

    • I prefer starting with small plants. Two or three plants can yield a nice crop, so you don’t need a lot.
    • Choose a sunny location. A small bed or corner of your yard is perfect, but tomatoes can be grown in large pots on your porch or patio if you get enough sun. They need at least 6-8 hours of sun a day.
    • Prepare your soil so they have an environment in which to thrive. I use Scott’s Miracle-Grow Soil and I am liberal with mixing a good deal of it into the garden area.
    • Space your plants at least two feet apart. Make sure you give the roots room to grow. Plant them deep enough to reach to the first couple of leaves. Once planted, I pinch off the very bottom leaves.
    • You’ll need a tomato cage for each plant. Place firmly over the plant so it can grow up the middle, and the branches will have support. When the tomatoes get growing, the vines can get heavy. I usually keep colorful ribbons or twist ties around to keep the stray branches attached to the cages once they start getting longer. Don’t let branches fall on the ground, this invites disease or bugs.
    • I like to plant one marigold between each tomato plant. They keep pests away, and they’re pretty. Basil is also a great companion plant to grow next to tomatoes because they go together in many recipes, and basil repels insects.

    • For the first couple of weeks you’ll want to water plants every day. After that, water maybe twice a week. (less if you get rain) You can usually tell when plants need water because they’ll look a little wilted.
    • Prune some leaves occasionally. Be careful not to pinch off the ones that have flowers. These little flowers are where your tomatoes will grow. It takes a little practice to determine where to prune. Normally the darker, tougher looking leaves are where you pinch back.
    • Pick tomatoes green to fry, or leave them on the vine until they are ripe and ready to slice.
If you don’t have a recipe for fried green tomatoes, one of our most famous Southern cooks, Paula Deen has a fabulous fried green tomato recipe!

    Grow well and prosper!

  • In-Depth with Rosebud

Morningside restaurant Rosebud has been known for its upscale comfort food and locally sourced produce since it opened in its current form in the summer of 2007. But ask Chef Ron Eyester what he would call Rosebud’s most important asset, and he’ll let you know it’s more than just the food. “I think we’re a great neighborhood oasis. I think we’re a true taste of Atlanta.”

To Eyester, Rosebud is where people come to enjoy great food in a great atmosphere. “I’ve been here for a long time now… and I feel that Rosebud is definitely not just my vision, but that my vision has become a collective vision of this neighborhood. I mean, when you listen to what people want, and you see what sells, inevitably that’s how your business is going to take shape. I think it’s a true reflection of this neighborhood and a very unique place. I think it’s a place where we’re very serious about the food, but we’re more serious about having a good time and enjoying each other’s company.”

Rosebud chef and owner Ron Eyester

Mixing good food with good company is just the way Eyester wants it, but he says that not everyone sees dining that way. “I think some people—like some foodies—think that you can’t have a good time while you eat good food, that it’s not the point. [I say], why do there have to be these certain parameters guiding my dining experience? Why can’t I just rejoice in the fact I’m eating very fresh food that’s cleverly and fundamentally soundly prepared, in an environment that’s inviting and comfortable?”

To visit this true Southern dining experience yourself, take Eyester’s advice and bring a gang of friends to 1397 North Highland Avenue in Atlanta. And try the buttermilk fried chicken—it’s delicious.

  • Smashburger Atlanta

Smashburger is coming South! This better-burger sensation has everything y’all ever wanted for the ultimate fast food experience…and they even serve adult beverages! Forget Five Guys, Wendy’s, Mickey D’s and the like: Smashburger has got beer and wine, plus your food is ready in six minutes or less!

Burgers, hot dogs, grilled chicken sandwiches, fries in multiple kinds — regular, shoestring, sweet potato and even veggie frites — plus fried pickles, fried onions and yummy chili. For lighter fare, there are fresh salads including slices of avocado, cucumbers, tomatoes, guacamole, and other crisp vegetables. Want to spice up your meal? Add the fresh grilled jalapenos which leave your mouth with a happy heat for the duration of your meal.

To cool off your palette, sample a Smashburger shake. These milkshakes are some of the best in Atlanta, made with Haagen-Dazs and available in floats and malts served in frosted mugs. Classic American flavors of chocolate, vanilla and strawberry compliment crazier concoctions such as the Nutter Butter. A sweet Peach Pie shake was created just for Smashburger’s Georgia locations.

The first Smashburger spot in Georgia is in Buckhead with two more stores opening in Johns Creek and Alpharetta later this summer with plans to open a Kennesaw location sometime in the fall. Management plans to open 20 Atlanta-area locations over the next seven years. Smashburger also opened shops in both Charlotte and New Orleans and are planning to spread more shops across the South.

Savory, sweet and so-freakin'-good! The Atlanta Burger includes peach BBQ sauce, Wicked® Pimena cheese, grilled jalapeños and Vidalia coleslaw. You'll feel a pleasant heat from start to finish.

Atlanta’s Smashburgers will feature a regional menu inspired by Southern flavors. The Atlanta Burger is topped peach BBQ sauce, Wicked® Pimena cheese, grilled jalapeños and Vidalia coleslaw plus the same toppings can be found on the Atlanta Dog.

PrettySouthern got to go back in the kitchen to learn how to smash a burger. The science of Smashburger was perfected by Tom Ryan: the same gentleman responsible for Pizza Hut’s stuffed crust pizza and McDonald’s McGriddle. He showed us how the burgers start as a “fluff ball” of 100% Angus Beef, which are laid across a grill that’s been slathered in butter. Yes, at Smashburger, they sear their burgers in butter! This forms a delicious, caramelized layer on the burger. After grilling, the Smashburger is placed between two buttered buns (more butter keeps the bun from falling apart around the burger) and topped with your choice of ingredients.

Just like their motto “Smash. Sizzle. Savor.” we smashed our burger, sizzled it on the piping hot grill, and savored the smashed goodness. Come hungry to Smashburger. Your tummy will need the extra space for this meal. Also, definitely register for their mobile messages. You’ll get info on discounts just by texting “Smashburger Atl” to 90210. Yes, it works. We tried it an are excited to see what other offers Smashburger has for Southerners.

Smashburger opens its first Atlanta location tomorrow (Thursday, July 7) in the old location where Fat Burger used to reside between Piedmont and Sydney Marcus in Buckhead (across from the Home Depot in the Marshall’s shopping center). For more information, check out their website or follow follow PrettySouthern to see what finds we have for you next below the Mason Dixon line.

Get your fine self over to Smashburger soon. That meaty magic is waiting for you.
